It is not easy describing Mukul Deva. You could call him a former army officer turned author whose writings span such different genres as short stories that include business leadership, women in Indian cinema, corporate warfare and crime fiction. But then, he's also an entrepreneur who runs a security firm in New Delhi. In addition, Deva is also a corporate trainer on disaster management and business continuity. So, who exactly is Mukul Deva?
An alumnus of La Martiniere College, Lucknow, the National Defence Academy, Pune and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Mukul Deva was commissioned in December 1981 into the Sikh Light Infantry of the Indian Army. He took early retirement from the army after fifteen years of service in 1996 as a Major, including a decade of combat operations in India and overseas. He co-founded the Delhi-headquartered MSD Security Pvt Ltd, which now operates in over 60 Indian cities. Another twist in the tale followed when Mukul turned to his first love - writing. The result was a series of books spanning genres as multi-faceted as his personality.
So all in all, he is what you call - an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, leadership, business and executive coach, and consultant and last but not the least, a great writer. He is the author of ‘Time After Time...It all Happened‘, ‘S.T.R.I.P.T.E.A.S.E: The Art of Corporate Warfare‘, ‘M.O.D.E.L: The Return of the Employee‘, the recently released ‘The Dust Will Never Settle‘ and four bestselling books in the ‘Lashkar series: ‘Lashkar‘, ‘Salim Must Die‘, ‘Blowback‘ and ‘Tanzeem‘.
Mukul started writing when he was in school. He rightly says that time is available to all of us all the time and we simply have to respect it and learn to manage it well. He had pretty much nothing other than the shirt on his back when he quit the army. And since he had left 3-4 years before his pensionable service even the comfortable security of the pension was not there. Security was what he had been trained in all his life and so setting up a security firm was a natural outcome. According to Mukul there are four things that we need to succeed in every endeavour – the ability to – Think with clarity, Listen for potential, Speak with intent, and Act with purpose.
With FIVE successive bestsellers in five years Mukul is acknowledged as India’s literary storm trooper and the pioneer of the Indian military action thriller and techno-thriller. Apparently, these multifarious activities did not satisfy the dreamy achiever. He wanted to make a difference. Realizing his passion for helping people live up to their potential, Mukul acquired certification in coaching from the Henley Business School, University of Reading, U.K. and embarked on the path of being The Change Maker, as a Business, Executive and Creativity Coach and an L&D specialist. That led to INFLUENCE SOLUTIONS PTE LTD, a Singapore-based company that provides customised learning and development solutions in English, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean in over a dozen countries. Mukul has also served as a Mentor on the United Nations Institute for Training & Research (UNITAR) Fellowship for Afghanistan from 2010 onwards.
Deva's reading tastes are as eclectic as his writings and he ranks Chetan Bhagat and Advaita Kala amongst his favourite authors. But his all-time favourite book is J.D. Salinger's ‘Raise High The Roof Beam’. About his future plans, Mukul is writing a crime thriller - The Shades of Black which explores the dark side of the human mind. Despite a prolific 'literary' journey, Deva is still unsure of any other genre he plans to explore. In his words, "I am growing as a human being and evolving in my own head. I don't know which way I will go."
Mukul has travelled a long, winding road and shows no signs of tiring. When asked how he finds the time, inspiration and energy for all this, Mukul simply says, “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it.”
